DPI 402t - Communication for Development: Reducing Teenage Pregnancy thru Whole-of-Society Engagement

Communication is a key component of many community development interventions.

To reduce teenage pregnancy, changes in attitudes and behaviors among teenagers, peers, parents, teachers, and other influencers around them is key. Aligning various government programs to support the prevention of teenage pregnancy requires skills in both leadership and communication.

DPI 402t is a blended learning course that equips communication and development professionals involved in teen health programs to apply Communication for Development tools developed by USAID, Johns Hopkins University, the CHANGE Project, C4C School, and UNICEF.

The Communications for Communicators School is a USAID-funded project implemented by the CHANGE Project in partnership with Johns Hopkins University Center for Communications Program and the Asian Institute of Management.

Whole-of-Society Approach

The Whole-of-Society (WOS) approach presumes that the work of reducing teenage pregnancy requires the engagement and co-creation of multiple stakeholders, from the mayor, to health personnel, teachers, barkada, neighbors, and family members. Social media, mobile phones, and traditional media can be used to this end.

The Limasawa case illustrates the different attitudinal and behavioral shifts that stakeholders need to undergo in order for the desired health outcomes to be achieved. Each stakeholder is an audience of a communication campaign that has to be tailored to their specific needs.
